At the Coffee Bar

Tuesday night 2006
Mood in the Coffee Bar was as usual when I came to this place. The tables were not occupied because just a few people visited this place. Jazz instrumental music was playing, filled the area. There were two waitresses talking behind the bar. I liked this mood, I liked this place. Sometimes, I came here to accomplish my assignment or just looked at people in this place who were busy with their own business.
I chose the place where I always took a place, at the corner. I never sat near the window, I was afraid of height. People thought that you could see beautiful view by the window, but I didn’t think so. I hated window. I liked door much better.
That night, everything was as usual, but one thing. I would meet Oka, an old friend I had not met later than for four years. What did he look like at this time?
A waiter came up to me. I ordered a glass of espresso, as usual. Seven o’clock. We made a rendezvous at six. He came late, as usual. A half passed seven. He had not come yet. I took a book from my bag, and began to read it. Where was he? He didn’t change at all. He also came late when we met for the last time, here. I sipped my espresso.

One Monday night 2002
Monday was the day when we usually met at the Coffee Bar. This was his favorite place. He liked to sit close to the window because he said that he had been able to see everything outside by the window. I waited for him for an hour but he had not come yet. I tried to call him by his cell phone but there’s no answer. I would go home, but at the end I would wait for him until he came.
“Sorry, I’m late” he always said these words because he’s always late.
His hair looked so shaggy. It might be flown by the wind as he ran. Then, he sat and ordered a glass of cappuccino. After that, we talked about many things while we drank our coffee.

Tuesday night 2006
I ran to my favorite place. Damn! I was late once more. I didn’t know, it seemed that I would never come in good time when I had to meet Anya at this place.
I was looking for Anya at the table near the window, but she was not there. I glanced to the whole place and found her at the corner. She was reading a book. She didn’t change. Every time we met here, I would get her reading her book.
“Are you waiting for someone lady?” I asked.
She was still reading her book. Her voice heard unenthusiastic, “Yes, I…” she moved her glance and she seemed surprised when she looked at my face.
“Oka…” she said my nick name quietly.
I smiled and sat before her. She really didn’t change.
“Sorry, I’m late” I said my favorite sentence.
She laughed, “Thousands of forgiveness for you, old friend”.
I called a waiter and ordered cappuccino, as usual. I took a quick look to Anya’s glass. Espresso? She didn’t like coffee, did she? Then why she ordered it?
Actually, I was surprised when she requested to meet here. This place has been my favorite place, but not for Anya. She used to refuse to come here, because she didn’t like coffee.
“You drink espresso?” I asked
“Yeah.”
“You don’t like coffee, do you?”
She smiled, “Everybody changes.”
“Um…Ok.” I said “So, how are you?”
“You look so different” she didn’t answer my question.
“Yeah, everybody changes” I repeated her words.
She laughed. I had not seen her laugh for a quite long time. She laughed as same as she used to laugh. But there’s something different. But I didn’t know what it was.
“So, what happen in these four years?”
She looked at her empty glass.
“Many things”
“Tell me from the beginning”
“You know?” she asked, “If I tell you, we won’t come to an end until morning comes”
“They have to stay here until morning comes, then” I glanced to the waiters.
She laughed. “I don’t know what I should tell you first”
“How about your family?”
“They are very well. Annie becomes more beautiful.” she winked at me.
I laughed “I’m too old for her”
“Um…but I’ve always thought that you are the right man for her. Different with her boyfriends currently”
“You make my face blush…” I said “How about you? How is he?”
“He? You mean he?” she took a deep breath, “He found other girl”
“Did he?” I was surprised. “You’ve been engaged since you’re still kids, haven’t you?”
“No…”
I looked at her eyes deeply.
“Yes, we’ve been friend since we were kids. But we’re not engaged as you think. Yes, I know that he’s fond of me, and he knows that I’m fond of him. But…just it. There’s too much misunderstanding between us. It makes us always fight. He has found a girl who cares for him so much, then.”
Did it make her different?
Silent. Jazz music was still playing. I hated jazz. It made me fell asleep.
“My parents divorced.” Suddenly she said.
I was surprised. I looked at her. She smiled unpleasantly.
“My dad cheated”
I said no word. She didn’t cry. Just looking at her glass.
“Since November last year”
“I don’t know what I should say” I said honestly
“You don’t have to say anything” she smiled again. “I just want to tell you…You know? I thought that my world stop turning for a while. I’ve never imagine that it will happen to me. I know that it’s their fault. Both of them. My aunt said to me that marriage is about two persons. When it ended, it must be because of their fault.” She called a waiter and asked a glass of espresso.
“Everything changes. Everybody changes” she said. “It seems that you belong nowhere.”
Honestly I didn’t really understand what she said. I’d never been there. But one thing, I was really sure, she had changed. I sipped my coffee.

Other Monday night 2002
For this time, she was late. This was the first time I came earlier than she. She had been late for an hour. Where was she? Then, couple minutes later she came. Her face looked so sad.
“Is there something wrong with you?” I asked
“He has a girlfriend” she said
I knew him. Anya always talked about him every time we met. She had been fond of him for years. I said no word. I couldn’t say anything. I called a waiter and ordered a glass of milk.
“How could you know?”
“I met them”
She didn’t cry, but she also didn’t look at me. The milk came. Vanilla. I forgot not to order vanilla milk. Anya didn’t like it. But she drank it. Slowly, she sobbed.
“I don’t know what I have to say” I said honestly. But I know, I didn’t have to say anything.
‘By Your Side’ by Sade was playing. I said no word until she stopped sobbing. She wiped her tears and suddenly said “You have to go home”
I looked at her eyes and said nothing. That was her. At that moment she cried, a few minutes later she will complain something to you.
“You feel better?”
“Yeah, and tonight you have to go home”
I had leaved home for a week. After I had fight with my dad. He forced me to do what he loved, while I didn’t like it so.
“You know? Family is a shelter. A place where you are loved unconditionally, a place where you are able to be yourself and they will accept you because you are you, and a place to hide when everybody destroys you.”
“Okay, I will go home tonight.”
“Great. By the way, you know that I don’t like vanilla milk, don’t you?”
That was her. Sometime I thought that I knew this girl well, but sometime I thought that I didn’t know her at all.
“Weirdo” I said quietly
“What?” she asked, and she drank my cappuccino.

Tuesday night 2006
That was very pleasant moment to talk with him. It has been so long that I didn’t talk to a friend like him.
“You still carve?” I asked
“Yeah…I tried to carve stones”
“Then?”
“My grandpa saw it, and then he urged me to stay in Bali, and started business of carving”
I laughed.
“It will be better for me than running a hotel.”
“You don’t like your job now?”
“Nope. I did it because of my dad. You always tell me that I have to be a good son, for I am the only son in my family, don’t you?”
“Yeah, but you don’t have to do something that you don’t like.”
“I have a plan. I will try to speak with my dad, tell him that I have no interest in running my family’s business. I’m still carving. I didn’t leave my hobbies”
He had changed. He used to be not really care about anything. I also had changed.
“Hey, what if I drink your cappuccino and you drink my espresso?” I asked as I laughed.
He shook his head fast.
